When you are dealing with metalworking and metal machinery, the last thing you want to see is rust. This is a bad sign that could be caused by many possible catalysts. The technicians at AFT, Inc.™ have seen this too many times and have provided the most common causes and their solutions below.
What causes rusting in CNC machines?
- Concentration too low
- Poor mixing (soluble oils)
- High concentration of dissolved solids in solution
- Galvanic reaction from dissimilar metals
- Evaporative cooler
- Fluid contamination
How to solve rusting problems in CNC machines
- Adjust concentration to specifications
- Add concentrate to water. Never add straight concentrate to sump.
- Clean chips from sump. Drain and recharge sump if necessary. Drain and recharge sump if necessary. Keep coolant filtered.
